FEELING ANXIOUS ABOUT AI, YOUR JOB AND THE FUTURE?

Feeling Anxious About AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is like that new kid in town who’s smart, talented, and a bit intimidating. AI is everywhere, from our smartphones to the way big companies do business. “One-third of organizations are already using generative AI regularly in at least one business function.”  However, despite the prevalence of AI, there’s still a gap between familiarity and usage among professionals. “According to a Prosci survey of Change Management professionals, 84% of respondents reported that they were moderately to very familiar with AI, yet only 48% currently use it in their change management work.” Why are they feeling anxious about AI? The main reasons listed were an overall lack of understanding of AI, limited access to tools and resources, and data privacy and safety concerns. While AI promises a world of possibilities, many of us are left scratching our heads, wondering how to make sense of it all.

The AI Boom

Think about it: AI is like the magic behind those personalized Netflix recommendations or the reason your smartphone can understand your voice commands. It’s a game-changer, revolutionizing how we work, communicate, and even think about the future. But as with any big change, it comes with its fair share of worries and uncertainties.

The Anxiety Factor

So, what’s got people and companies feeling anxious about AI? Well, for starters, there’s the fear of the unknown. AI feels like this powerful force that’s reshaping industries and job markets faster than we can keep up. Will my job be taken over by a robot? Will my skills become obsolete? These are valid concerns that many of us share.

The Dilemma

Here’s the reality: AI isn’t going away. It’s here to stay, whether we like it or not. And while it’s wildly powerful and transformative, it’s also a bit like a new toy that we haven’t quite figured out how to use yet. We know it has the potential to change our lives for the better, but we’re not quite sure how to harness that power.

Embracing the Future

But fear not! There are ways to navigate this brave new world of AI without feeling like you’re in over your head. Education is key. Just like learning to ride a bike or drive a car, understanding AI takes time and practice. Dr. Ethan Mollick advises, “Spend 10 hours just experimenting on AI.” Take advantage of online courses, workshops, and resources to familiarize yourself with the basics.

Collaboration, Not Competition

Lastly, remember that AI isn’t meant to replace us—it’s meant to enhance us. Instead of viewing it as a threat, think of it as a personal butler, research assistant or an editor-in-chief,  helping us solve complex problems and unlock new possibilities. Collaborate with AI rather than seeing it as competition.

In Conclusion

“It’s clear that our world is changing at record pace, driven by wildly powerful technology that will continue to transform it.”  If you’re feeling anxious about AI, your job, and the future, you’re not alone. But if the uncertainty or anxiety is holding you back, address the fear with curiosity and a growth mindset to learn, grow, and thrive in this brave new world.
